# Getting started

Before you start with Mollie Connect, we recommend checking out <Anchor target="_blank" href="https://docs.mollie.com/docs/core-concepts">Core concepts</Anchor> and <Anchor target="_blank" href="https://docs.mollie.com/docs/glossary">Glossary</Anchor>. You will also need to have a **Mollie partner account** to start using Connect, you can sign up for it <Anchor target="_blank" href="https://www.mollie.com/dashboard/signup">here</Anchor>.

Both **Platform** and **Marketplace** models follow the same onboarding steps below, with sections that apply to only a certain model specified.

## Step 1: Register your OAuth app

Everything in Mollie Connect starts with registering an [OAuth app](https://docs.mollie.com/docs/authentication-via-oauth) in the Mollie Web App. This OAuth app is the identity your platform uses to later act on behalf of your merchants. <br />You only need to configure it once: set your redirect URI, choose relevant permission scopes and optionally enable co-branded onboarding.

Permission scopes deserve careful consideration at this stage. Adding permissions after launch **requires all your connected merchants to re-authorize**, so make sure to plan ahead.

## Step 2: Onboard your merchants

Once your app is registered, you can start connecting merchants to it. Mollie needs to verify each merchant through a KYB process before they can accept live payments.

The standard path takes merchants through an OAuth authorization flow. For a faster, more embedded experience, the <Anchor target="_blank" href="https://docs.mollie.com/reference/client-links-api">Client Links API</Anchor> lets you pre-fill merchant details and launch a co-branded onboarding flow from within your product. Either way, you can monitor onboarding status programmatically and track it from your partner dashboard.

## Step 3: Process payments

With merchants onboarded and connected, you can start accepting payments on their behalf using the <Anchor target="_blank" href="https://docs.mollie.com/reference/payments-api">Payments API</Anchor>. Payments are always tied to a specific merchant profile and you can control which payment methods appear at checkout.

Use *test* mode while building. Webhooks are the recommended way to track payment status changes: always fetch the full payment object from the API when a webhook arrives rather than trusting the payload alone.

## Step 4: Route funds or monetize payments

What happens to money after a payment is processed depends on your model.

**Platforms:** earn revenue per transaction by adding an application fee at payment creation time. If you want a no-code rate-based approach, Resell Pricing lets you configure margins without sending individual API calls.

→ [Monetize payments](https://docs.mollie.com/docs/connect-monetize-payments)

**Marketplaces:** distribute funds across multiple sellers using split payments. If you know the split at checkout time, use upfront routing. If you need to wait for a delivery confirmation or another trigger, delayed routing gives you up to 90 days to determine how funds are distributed.

## Step 5: Transfer balances

Balance transfers let you move settled funds between Mollie organizations and are useful for collecting invoices, redistributing revenue or applying post-settlement corrections. Balance transfers are used for both Platforms and Marketplaces.

→ [Balance transfers](https://docs.mollie.com/docs/connect-balance-transfers)

## Step 6: Set up reporting

Mollie provides reporting tools that give you visibility into fees, margins, and payouts at the transaction level.

Platforms can access the **Transaction Margin Report** for fee visibility and margin analysis. <br />Marketplaces have the **Holding Balance Report** for tracking funds held between payment and routing.

## Step 7: Go live

Before switching to *live* mode, go through the go-live checklist for your model. It covers account verification, integration requirements, compliance checks and what to confirm before processing your first live payment.
